As we pass the Fourth of July, we often pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy. We think of the boldness it took to declare independence and the courage it takes to protect and preserve liberty. But one freedom that is sometimes overlooked, and yet deeply woven into the fabric of our lives, is the freedom the arts give us.

The arts grant us the freedom to say, “This is who I am.” To express how we feel, to reflect on where we’ve been, and to shine a light on where we are now. Whether through music, dance, painting, theatre, or poetry, the arts allow us to tell our stories – personally, culturally, historically – with honesty and heart.

They let us reminisce through rhythm, to feel the beat of our youth, or to escape into the harmony of nature’s beauty. They give voice to those who might not otherwise be heard. They offer space to wrestle with meaning, to contemplate words and images in our own way, and at our own pace.

The arts are not just entertainment. They are a vital expression of our humanity. And right now, in this time and place, we have the extraordinary freedom to experience them fully and freely.

Not everyone around the globe can say the same. Not everyone throughout history has had that privilege. So during this season of reflection and celebration, let’s also celebrate this freedom: the freedom to create, to feel, to connect, and to be seen.

The arts are here. They are ours. Don’t take them for granted. They are not guaranteed.
