Alright, alright! Gather round, ’cause Hermes has got a story for you.

Up here, we’re livin’ it up, that’s where you’ll meet Orpheus, a boy with a song in him that could change the world, and Eurydice, a girl who’s learned the hard way not to trust a promise she can’t see with her own two eyes.

But down below? Down below, King Hades built himself a kingdom that time forgot, all iron and gears and old glory, grinding on long after its moment’s passed, while Persephone counts the days till she gets to come back up for air.

Two old love stories, one old road between them, and Batavia High School is bringing it to life with a full cast of singers, dancers, and musicians who’ll make you believe every word of it.

So come on. Buy your ticket. Take your seat. It’s a sad song … but we’re gonna sing it anyway.

HADESTOWN Teen Edition: see it before it’s gone.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Hadestown occupies time and space in worlds that have been, that may be now, and that may repeat again in the future. Based in mythology- but rooted in humanity-  the show takes us on a journey that, although seemingly tragic, offers musings of hopefulness. We have choices. In the face of all we encounter, no matter how many times the world has proven tragic, we can decide how and when to continue, to learn, and to persevere in the hope that change is possible. We can care, and we can emerge thoughtful of our globe, our people, our circles, and their impact.

Hadestown takes place everywhere, in a perpetually repeating cycle. It is where we find industrial injustice, the walling off of a people, the hoarding of resources, and the need to place people beneath us instead of next to us. No matter where in the timeline of civilization we find the mirror of this tale, one thing is certain: people’s fates can be manipulated and exploited by those who prey upon anxieties for their own gain. The interesting thing is that this behavior is infectious, growing and spreading over time, just as our fates do. This leads to inevitable tragedy.

So, why do we keep singing when the outcome of the tale appears predetermined? Because maybe hope is not only something we feel. It is something we do.

Because through it all, we have a choice. We can silence the hound dog clamoring for us to second-guess, to doubt the very thing that makes life worth living: hope. We can believe that our actions can change the gathering storm. We can hope in the simplicity of love, pure and non-transactional, in a world so worn with pricing its goods and motives.

We hope our telling of Hadestown propels you, our audience, forward into a world of change, where those who rule with fear and forgotten love are left to save face because we refused to let them save themselves at the cost of humanity. You can have hope, and we can raise our cups to starting again, no matter how many times that train barrels down those tracks.

That is why we keep singing.
